Marikina City further strengthens multi-hazards awareness in partnership with GMMA-READY and RAP
Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:22

A 1-day seminar to present the results of the multi-hazards mapping and risk analysis conducted under the AusAID-funded projectsEnhancing Greater Metro Manila Areas Institutional Capacities for Effective Disaster/ Climate Risk Management towards sustainable development (GMMA-READY) and Risk Analysis Project (RAP) was conducted in partnership with the City of Marikina on 21 January at the Marikina City Convention Center.

The seminar-workshop attended by officials from Marikina City DRRMO, the 16 barangays, schools, representatives from homeowners association, rescue volunteers among others, focused on the familiarization of the various geologic and hydrometeorological hazards maps. This is to further strengthen the awareness of Marikina City, and be able to enhance their existing DRRM Plan by integrating the additional information from the projects into the plan.

Director Renato U.Solidum, Jr, of PHIVOLCS in his opening remarks emphasized the importance of being aware of the hazards present in one’s area and practicing “disaster imagination,” orvisualizingthe possible scenarios specially impactsthat could happen during a specific hazardous event (whether flood, severe wind, earthquake), so that action plans are based on these. This can be done by using the available technical information from the various mandated national government agencies and assessing the hazards and risks. It is also important to test the existing plans by conducting simulation exercisesso that improvements can be made on the plan before a real event occurs.

The presentations of the hazard maps was made by the different resource speakers from collaborating agencies Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Mines and Geoscience Bureau (MGB) and National Mapping Resources Information Agency (NAMRIA) and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and each presentation was followed immediately by hands-on study of the hazard maps. Introduction and familiarization with maps was presented by NAMRIA. Topics on exposure data of Metro Manila, earthquake-related hazards (ground rupture, ground-shaking, liquefaction and earthquake-induced landslides, and the earthquake risk assessment results for Marikina City) were presented by invited speakers from PHIVOLCS. The discussion on rain-induced landslide was conducted by MGB while severe wind and flood hazard and risk were presented by resource speakers from PAGASA. A total of 75 participants attended the seminar. This joint GMMA-READY and RAP activityis supported by the Australian Aid Program (AusAID) thru the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). /mlmvillegas/phivolcs
