Tectonic geomorphology and paleoseismology of the Surigao segment of the Philippine fault in northeastern Mindanao Island, Philippines

The Philippine fault is a major strike-slip fault that traverses the entire Philippine archipelago for > 1250 km and has generated at least 10 surface rupturing earthquakes for the past 200 years. To better understand its characteristics, we have conducted review of historical earthquakes, tectonic geomorphic mapping and paleoseismic trenching along the 100-km-long Surigao segment, the northernmost segment of the Philippine fault on Mindanao Island. We mapped the Surigao fault based on aerial photographs and identification of well-defined geomorphic features in the field. Combining this with historical accounts and paleoseismic trenching, we have identified and mapped the surface rupture of the 1879 Mw 7.4 Surigao earthquake. Paleoseismic trenching conducted at two sites also led us to identify evidence of at least four surface-rupturing earthquakes including the 1879 event during the past 1300 years.

PHIVOLCS Conducts REDAS Training for Baguio City

PHIVOLCS conducted a six-day training entitled "Mainstreaming of Disaster Risk Reduction into the Local Development Planning Process, Contingency Planning, and Emergency Preparedness through the Provision and Use of the REDAS Software" for Baguio City last December 5 - 10, 2016. The training was held at Prime Hotel, Baguio City. The goal of the training was to provide and familiarize the participants with the capability of the REDAS Software, especially the modules which are designed to be used for risk assessment.

There was a total of 38 participants during the training. Thirty (30) of them came from the city offices of Baguio City, 1 from Saint Louis University, 2 from the University of Baguio, 2 from University of the Cordilleras, 2 from BENECO and 1 from NEDA - CAR. The participants were provided with REDAS version 2.9b. A total of 39 REDAS software license keys was issued during the said event.

The first day of the training covered the introduction of PHIVOLCS, installation and orientation on the basic features of REDAS Software and basic map reading. The succeeding days of the training covered lectures ranging from Building Risk Database, Earthquake Risk Assessment, the use of SQLite as a Relational and Spatial Database System, and Seismic Hazard Assessment. The new modules for Severe Wind Risk (SWIFT) and Flood Risk (FLOAT) were also incorporated in the training. In addition, software such as Exposure Database Module (EDM), SQLite and Quantum GIS, and the EDM and MyTracks in Android devices were also installed during the training. The participants were taught how to use the EDM in Android Devices for conducting building survey. Different earthquake risk assessment methodologies and computations were also taught in the training, as well as identifying building earthquake damage levels for conducting earthquake risk assessment.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology – Department of Science and Technology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) commemorates the 2012 Negros Oriental Earthquake on its 5th year.

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the islands of Negros, Cebu, and nearby islands of Western Visayas region at 11:49 A.M. on February 6, 2012. The earthquake was generated by a thrust fault movement with the epicenter located in Tayasan, Negros Oriental. An Intensity VIII (very destructive) was felt in Tayasan, Vallehermoso, Jimalalud, La Libertad, and Guihulngan, Negros Oriental.

The estimated total cost of damage to infrastructure was Php 383,059,000.00.00. A total of 51 dead and 112 injured while 62 were missing from the landslide in Solongon, La Libertad and Planas, Guihulngan (NDRRMC SitRep No. 22, 20 Feb 2012).

PHIVOLCS Holds the Third REDAS Users' Convention

The 3rd REDAS Users' Convention was held last October 17 - 19, 2016 at PHIVOLCS in Quezon City. A total of 55 participants,  32 from local government units, 5 from state universities and colleges, 15 from national government agencies and 3 from private companies, attended the convention. The LGUs were Rosario and General Trias City (Cavite), Surigao City (Surigao Del Norte), Tandag City (Surigao del Sur), Buhi (Camarines Sur), Concepcion, Carles, Lemery (Iloilo), Quezon (Nueva Vizcaya), Lopez and Unisan (Quezon), Hagonoy (Bulacan), Bago City (Negros Occidental), and Makati City (Metro Manila). The State Universities and Colleges were Isabela State University, Cagayan State University, University of the Philippines - Department of Civil Engineering and East Visayas State University. The National Government Agencies: NAMRIA, PCIEERD-DOST, PAGASA-DOST, MGB, DPWH-BOD, DOST Region II, DILG Benguet and DOH-HEMB as well as MMDA. The private companies were  Globe Telecom and Aboitiz Equity Ventures. The Convention aimed to showcase the usage of REDAS, introduce new modules, get feedbacks and recommendations, and for REDAS users to interact with each other.The three-day convention had the following themes: REDAS Severe Wind Impact Forecasting Tool (SWIFT) for Day 1, REDAS Flood Loss Assessment Tool (FLOAT) for Day 2, and REDAS Seismic Hazard Assessment (SHAke) for Day 3. A half-day session to showcase REDAS usage by participants was allotted in Day 2. Simultaneous with the sessions, participants were given upgrades of the REDAS software (version 2.9a) as well as the REDAS Exposure Database Module (EDM) and Tool for Seismic Intensity Reporting (ToSIR), which are new REDAS applications using Android devices.

Day 1 started with a Welcome Remarks by PHIVOLCS Director Renato U. Solidum, Jr. This was followed by the introduction of the participants by Engr. Angelito G. Lanuza.  Then, REDAS Coordinator Dr. Maria Leonila P. Bautista presented the Aims and Overview of the Convention. The technical session began with the talk of Recent Severe Wind Impacts by Ma. Cecilia Monteverde of PAGASA-DOST. Engr. Dave Andrei Rivera presented an overview on the Building Typology and Vulnerability Curves while Engr. Analyn D. Aquino gave a lecture on the Introduction of LGU Exposure Database. Mr. Ruffy R. Villanueva conducted a lecture about the data preparation of of the SWIFT module. After these preparatory lectures, a hands-on exercise on the SWIFT module was led by Ms. Analiza Tuddao from PAGASA-DOST.

The second day started with a discussion about Recent Damaging Floods by Engr. Socrates Paat Jr. of PAGASA-DOST. This was then followed by the data preparations of FLOAT delivered by Mr. Ruffy R. Villanueva. After these, hands-on exercise on the usage of FLOAAT was led by Engr. Greggue Ann Lyza Castro. The afternoon session was devoted to four presentations on REDAS Usage. The first presentation was by Mr. Elmer Rosete from Isabela State University with the title "Estimating Impacts of Damaging Earthquake Risks: Application of Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) in Region 01". The next presenter was Mr. Policarpio L. Maborrang, Jr. from Cagayan State University with the lecture entitled "Mga Guhit sa REDAS Tungo sa Bayang Ligtas". The talk discussed a project that CSU will implement to generate earthquake-risk maps for the different  campuses of the university. The third speaker was from the private sector, Globe Telecom. The talk entitled "The Value of REDAS for Globe’s Business Continuity" were presented by Jayme Gonzales and Ryan Patiu of the Globe Telecom's Business Continuity Section. The last presenters were Liz Velle Ramos and Franklin Sanchez, both from Makati City LGU with the topic "Makati City REDAS Application: Mapping our way towards resilience". They wanted to apply the REDAS software in developing the exposure database of their city. In order to address newcomers, a recap of the REDAS -SWIFT Lecture was presented by Mr. Clint Drexel Ongue and Mr. John Ted Sison after the four presentations.  In between sessions, the participants were invited to visit the PHIVOLCS Data Receiving Center (DRC) to get a first-hand glimpse of the earthquake-monitoring facilities in the country.

The third day focused on the earthquake-related lectures. It started with the lecture about the REDAS EDM for Android Devices by Engr. Greggue Ann Lyza Castro and followed by REDAS ToSIR by Mr. Clint Drexel Ongue. These were then followed by hands-on on REDAS - SHAKE given by Engr. Dave Andrei Rivera. The last lecture is the "Recent Damaging Earthquakes" by Mr. Ishmael C. Narag. To conclude the convention, PHIVOLCS Deputy Director Bartolome C. Bautista gave the closing remarks.
